High-efficiency Low-cost AEM Electrolyzer 2026/09/29

Introductions

Transitioning from a petroleum to a hydrogen economy requires low-cost, low-carbon H2 production to achieve 2050 Net-Zero goals. Anion Exchange Membrane Electrolysis (AEMEL) offers significant advantages, including the use of nickel-based catalysts, simplified system architecture, and rapid response to renewable energy. This technology provides low-carbon hydrogen for high-value chemicals and enables renewable energy grid balancing.

Technical Advantages and Features

  • Low-cost Critical Components: Eliminates precious metals by integrating nickel-based catalysts to reduce costs significantly, extends the operational lifetime of BOP components including pumps and sensors, and simplifies system architecture while minimizing water quality management costs.
  • High-efficiency, Low-power Consumption Technology: Optimizes electrolysis module design for high efficiency and low impedance, integrates low-power BOP components and control logic with BOP consumption ≤ 3.0 kWh/kg-H2, and achieves low power consumption ≤ 53 kWh/kg-H2.
  • Smart Monitoring and On-site Production: Enables seamless coupling with renewable energy due to low reaction resistance, supports continuous 24-hour operation through intelligent real-time monitoring, and facilitates easy on-site installation for immediate on-demand hydrogen supply.

Industrial Applications and Business Opportunities

  • Industry Applications
    • High-value petrochemicals, decarbonization of steel manufacturing, and energy storage or grid balancing.
  • Application Examples
    • TPRI 10 kW AEMEL Electrolyzer: Developed for the Taiwan Power Research Institute and coupled with a 65 kW microturbine for hydrogen-blended power generation. It validates hydrogen pressure and production stability, providing a reliable decarbonization solution for gas turbine power plants.
    • Chemical Production Integration: Integrated into ITRI’s high-value chemical alkenes pilot plant for on-demand hydrogen supply. This onsite solution eliminates the logistics and safety risks of high-pressure gas cylinders, streamlining facility management while reducing carbon footprints.
