Autonomous And Electric Vehicle

EV SiC Traction Inverter technology 2026/09/29

Introductions

Electric vehicles are evolving towards high-power, 800V high-voltage, and fast-charging architectures. Traction Inverter needs to maintain high efficiency under high-frequency, high-voltage, and high-current conditions. However, traditional silicon-based Traction inverter is prone to high power losses and thermal loads, becoming a major bottleneck in improving power density and reducing system size. ITRI has invested in SiC high-power-density traction inverter, compact designs, and the AUTOSAR high-efficiency drive control platform to reduce conversion losses and shrink controller size, thereby improving power density, drive control efficiency, and automotive-grade compatibility.

Technical Advantages and Features

  • High Power Density Silicon Carbide Traction Inverter: Utilizes high-voltage, high-current silicon carbide power modules paired with an electric bus motor, achieving up to 405 kW drive power. The traction inverter reaches 99% efficiency and a power density of 115 kW/L, exceeding the United States Department of Energy 2025 target of 100 kW/L.
  • Compact Design: Developed a thin PCB-based current sensor and novel ceramic capacitor module hardware technologies. Combined with optimized mechanical and liquid-cooling channel design, achieving a compact 3.5 L drive controller.
  • Automotive Multi-core High-efficiency Processor: Establish an AUTOSAR-based Traction Inverter Platform to enhance software modularity and reusability. Improve Traction Inverter efficiency through a high-performance computing platform and task allocation, supporting high-speed motor operation and high switching frequency applications.

Industrial Applications and Business Opportunities

  • Industry Applications
    • Electric mobility industry (e.g., electric vehicles and electric vessels).
    • Autonomous and Electric Vehicle.
  • Application Examples
    • Technology has been transferred to multiple Taiwanese companies, including Shihlin Electric, Tatung, TECO and Actron, enabling integration across the domestic powertrain supply chain to vehicle manufacturers. For example, China Motor Corporation’s ET35 3.5-ton electric truck adopts an integrated power system transferred to Shihlin Electric, and the CMC E300 also incorporates this core technology.
