MOEA Accelerates AI-Driven Transformation of Taiwan's Machine Tool Industry 2026/03/27

The Technology R&D Pavilion, organized by the Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT) under the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), officially debuted on March 25 at the 2026 Taiwan International Machine Tool Show (TMTS). In response to evolving geopolitical dynamics and global supply chain restructuring, the MOEA has strategically integrated R&D capabilities from leading research institutes to accelerate the intelligent transformation of Taiwan's machine tool industry.

The pavilion features 13 AI-enabled technologies for high-end machine tools, many of which have already been adopted by major publicly listed companies and end users, including World Known Precision Industry, KAFO, Proxene Tools, Chin Fong Machine Industrial, and Phison. These implementations underscore the growing maturity and industrial relevance of Taiwan's AI-driven manufacturing solutions.

Among the key highlights is an AI-powered intelligent assembly quality inspection system capable of automatically generating diagnostic results within five minutes. This innovation significantly enhances product consistency and reliability, contributing to a 20% increase in orders for vertical machining centers in the U.S. market. Another notable advancement, the Edge AI predictive maintenance and multi-sensing solution, has increased the added value of high-end servo presses by 20%, enabling Taiwanese manufacturers to successfully enter the supply chain of aerospace leader Bombardier. These developments reflect Taiwan's steady progress in penetrating high-value, high-barrier international markets.

The 2026 Taiwan International Machine Tool Show (TMTS) opened on March 25, featuring representatives from the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), including DoIT Senior Technical Specialist Tsung-Hsun Tsou, alongside delegates from the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and the Precision Machinery Research & Development Center (PMC).

According to DoIT Senior Technical Specialist Tsung-Hsun Tsou, the global machine tool industry is approaching a critical inflection point amid ongoing geopolitical shifts. To sustain competitiveness, Taiwanese enterprises must accelerate AI adoption to enhance precision, quality, and system integration capabilities. Through its technology development initiatives, DoIT has positioned AI-driven manufacturing upgrades as a strategic priority, guiding the industry’s transition from price-based competition toward value-driven differentiation. This approach is intended to strengthen Taiwan's foothold in high-entry-barrier sectors such as aerospace, semiconductors, and automotive industries.

To further expedite industrial upgrading, DoIT has invested nearly NT$10 billion in R&D over the past four years, with a strong emphasis on AI innovation and hardware–software integration. By leveraging the translational capabilities of research institutes to bridge the gap between laboratory development and industrial deployment, these efforts generated an output value exceeding NT$2.4 billion in 2025.

In parallel, the AI Application Leap Program has successfully digitized the tacit knowledge and craftsmanship of experienced technicians into standardized, reproducible, and transferable competencies. This initiative not only addresses workforce shortages and skills gaps, but also elevates the precision and intelligence of Taiwan-made equipment to levels comparable with leading manufacturing nations such as Germany and Japan.
